The Importance to Grooming Your Dog
Poodle Crosses
The most popular mix of breeds that we see.

Fur on poodle crosses, can be difficult to maintain, so understandably, most owners opt to have the coat clipped quite short. This reduces the build up of knots/matting, and debris in the coat.

If the coat is to be left longer, especially during colder months, it will require more maintenance, such as frequent brushing/combing (especially high friction areas such as armpits and behind the ears). Frequent grooming (every 6 weeks) is essential, to prevent the coat getting out of hand.
Smooth Coated Breeds
These are the simplest of breeds to groom, and so many go through their lives without a brush, or even a bath.

The benefits of grooming include a visual health check, bath to remove dead hair/skin, cleansing of pores, ears and hygiene areas. As well as, clipping/filing of nails.
Double Coated Breeds
These are your Collies, German Shepherds, Labradors and many others.

The amount of coat removed from these breeds, can often shock most owners. These breeds have thick coats, for the jobs they were bred for. Though lets face it, most live indoors, and are pampered (so they deserve)! This comfortable lifestyle means shedding dead hair throughout the year.

Regular trips to the groomer are recommended, as a de-shed will not only make your dog more comfortable, but is proven to improve blood circulation.
Matted Dogs
A common problem for groomers who see dogs infrequently, is matting. Although there are areas more prone, matting can occur all over.

It is more of a problem in certain breeds, than others. The longer a knot remains in the coat, the worse it gets, until it eventually becomes matted. Even with regular brushing, quite often the act of brushing alone does not remove the knot, as it just brushes over.

Most groomers enjoy the work of scissoring, and styling. They also enjoy developing a relationship with the dog. Your groomer will always prefer a knot free coat, and will certainly not want to cause your dog any pain/discomfort. If a groomer is pulling on a knotted coat, the relationship between dog & groomer could be damaged, possibly for the rest of their life. And make turning up to the groomers, less enjoyable.

The de-matting process is not acceptable if the coat is badly knotted, so a groomer will often suggest clipping the coat short (it grows back)! This solution is pain-free. For those trying to manage an easily knotted coat, it's recommended you comb daily (against the skin) in addition to brushing.
Hand Stripped Breeds
Hand stripping remains popular for Terrier breeds, Westies, or even Cocker Spaniels.

These dogs will be tinkered with by their owners (a little like a classic car owner does with their engine), to keep it maintained. Similarly, these dogs will have dead hair pulled daily or weekly to keep them looking their best. The disadvantage for pet owners wanting their dog stripped (aside from the expense for a professional groom), is that too much tinkering can often make it difficult for your groomer, as dogs often get presented too early or often, because the dog looks shaggy, but the coat is not ready to be pulled to create the look the owner wants.

In these circumstances, a groomer will not want to cause the dog pain/discomfort, and will suggest either to wait longer, or to consider clipping, so that it's easier to maintain. If you do choose to clip a coat that's previously been stripped, it's what we refer to as a 'blown coat', where it softens, and can dilute slightly in colour, and will not strip easily. Therefore it's recommended not to return to stripping after you've clipped.
